Which baby carrier should I choose?

Are you looking for the perfect baby carrier to take your little one everywhere, but not sure where to start? We will be happy to help you. Before you make that all-important decision, it’s a good idea to find out all the information that you can. What aspects should you pay attention to when looking for the best carrier? Read all about it here.

Comfortable and secure carrying

One of the most important aspects of a good baby carrier is ergonomics. And not just for the little one, but for yourself as well.

For young babies (up to the age of five or six months) whose neck muscles are not yet strong enough, it’s important that the head is sufficiently supported. Wearing your baby on your belly with their face towards you is the only safe and ergonomic way to carry them at that moment.

Once your baby's neck muscles are strong enough and they can safely sit, there are several possible carrying positions: on your belly, facing outwards, or on your back. Do you carry them with their face looking out so they can discover the world with you? Make sure your baby has enough support and their legs are at an angle of at least 90°.

You should also check how the carrier fits you, the wearer. Of course, the idea is to be able to wear them for a long time without it feeling like a burden. Stop by your favourite local baby store or a carrier consultant and try out a few baby carriers. This way you will quickly feel which one is the most comfortable for you!

Easy to carry

When you go to try on some baby carriers, make sure that the one you choose is not too complicated. A good one is easy to adjust, and quick to put on and take off without too much thought. Having a storage pouch feature is also a plus point.

Will other people be using the carrier? If so, make sure the carrier is easily adjustable and feels comfortable for all wearers. Go for one that is adapted to your physique and physical capabilities.

Long-lasting wear

Are you looking for a baby carrier that will last a long time and doesn’t show signs of wear? Then look for one that is durable and made from quality materials. Good fabrics to have on the inside of a baby carrier are soft to the touch, hard-wearing and breathable. Some examples are: cotton, Tencel and mesh.

Ask for any associated quality certificates in the baby store. You should also check that the straps and buckles are secure and that the carrier is machine washable. That’s always useful!

Choosing a baby carrier is not something you can do on a whim. Consider the different options and find out which one feels best for you and your child, and you will have many years of carrying fun!
