Behind the scenes at Voksi: finding the perfect fabric!

Meet Jonathan Pavar Gregersen – Voksi®’s Technical Designer who is truly passionate about finding the right fabric for the right purpose.  

«For some people, finding the right fabric seems like a simple process. But we use a lot of energy on this important matter and I can assure you – it’s not that simple.»

Jonathan has always been multi creative, observant and paid attention to details. After graduation he worked as Head of Design for Weekend Copenhagen and the Scandinavian Sneaker Brand Born//Raised, before he got a position as Technical Designer with Ida Ising at Voksi.

“I love the outdoor life and have been fishing all my life. That is why I have experience on how to dress properly based on the weather conditions and how different materials work regarding their durability and functional design”, he explains.

So, how do you choose the right fabric for – let’s say – a stroller bag for children? 

“Before you start, you have to know what you want to do and what your goals are. For us at Voksi, the goal is to create high quality products with a classic and Scandinavian design. We want to provide parents with the most high-quality product on the market and always be one step ahead. To do that, you need the right materials.

Before choosing the materials, you need to know more about the abilities that the fabrics must possess. To get that information we do a lot of research.”

What Jonathan wants to know is: What is going on – who is doing what – and why? 

He explores the market, studies test results, visits fairs, gathers experiences from forums and takes inspiration from related industries. 

This research results in thorough information about all technical details. However, having the best technical numbers is not the same as having the best fabric. In reality it is much more complicated. 

“It is easy to find a material that can perform better than others, but if it’s three times as heavy and stiff, full of hazardous chemicals and creates a lot of toxic waste and pollution in production, then you might be better off with something else”, Jonathan explains. 

Technical numbers are just one thing. And then there’s everything else, such as sustainability, certificates, agility, functionality,… the list goes on. 

A stroller bag is an example of a product made of more than one layer – this means that the layers have to work together in order to be fully functional. Additionally, for us at Voksi® it is also essential that they are certified by Oeko-Tex® 100, class 1 to ensure that there are no hazardous chemicals in the fabric. 

As a result, we need three layers of fabrics for a stroller bag that all need to fulfil different purposes: an outer fabric (technical and durable), filling (insulation, keeping the child at the right temperature) and an inner fabric (function, look and feel). 

Lastly, there is one more thing to keep in mind at all times.
“We of course want to make sure that parents can afford high-quality products like our Voksi stroller bags, so the proportions to land on the target price for the garment need to be just right.”

“It’s all about knowing what you want to do and then there’s the puzzle of a lot of pro’s and con’s to get it all right. It always depends on what we are doing, what it needs to be capable of and all the different demands there are to the product. It’s all about having the right fabric for the right purpose.”
